The Connecticut Swallowing Center uses Fiberendoscopic Examination
to evaluate a patient’s swallow. This minimally invasive procedure does not require anesthesia and is designed to give maximum
visual feedback without the disadvantages of the more traditional modified barium swallow which uses x-rays to analyze swallowing
function. Fiberendoscopic Examination of (FEES) is done in the doctors’ office by a speech-language pathologist extensively
trained in the use of the equipment. It presents a minimum of discomfort to the patient while offering actual visualization
of swallowing. The procedure can be seen on a video screen and can even be recorded so that the test can be reviewed at any
time by the team for further reference.
The FEES provides members of the team with specific information about the origin
and extent of the swallowing difficulties. A treatment plan can be designed to meet the specific needs of the patient. By
combining evaluation, diagnosis and treatment, an accurate and comprehensive plan of care insures optimum results. Each patient’s
primary physician can receive prompt reports about diagnosis, treatment and progress on request.
